  1. Durham is a county of North East England. It
  2. covers an area of 2,440sq km (942sq miles).
  3. It has a population of 593,600.

  5. The County town is the city of Durham
  6. which was founded in 995 AD. The Norman 
  7. Cathedral, which dates from 1093, and the 
  8. Castle, built by William the Conqueror in
  9. 1072, are adjacent to each other and are a
  10. magnificent sight when approached across the
  11. Cathedral Close. The Cathedral door has the
  12. famous "Sanctuary Knocker"-any miscreant who
  13. managed to reach and touch the knocker
  14. before being caught was granted sanctuary
  15. within the cathedral. The remains of The
  16. Venerable Bede were transferred to the
  17. cathedral in 1370. The city also has a
  18. University which was founded in 1832.
  19. The famous annual Miners' Gala is held here.
  20. A feature of the county is the Beamish Live
  21. Open-Air Museum.
