Durham is a county of North East England. It
covers an area of 2,440sq km (942sq miles).
It has a population of 593,600.
The County town is the city of Durham
which was founded in 995 AD. The Norman
Cathedral, which dates from 1093, and the
Castle, built by William the Conqueror in
1072, are adjacent to each other and are a
magnificent sight when approached across the
Cathedral Close. The Cathedral door has the
famous "Sanctuary Knocker"-any miscreant who
managed to reach and touch the knocker
before being caught was granted sanctuary
within the cathedral. The remains of The
Venerable Bede were transferred to the
cathedral in 1370. The city also has a
University which was founded in 1832.
The famous annual Miners' Gala is held here.
A feature of the county is the Beamish Live
Open-Air Museum.
